I thought I was a young bride (married at 21), but brides at 7, I have no words to display my disgust for this truth. The truth of the matter is, a seven year old girl should be playing with dolls and not being pimped to a 60-year-old man (Yeah, I said it, they are being pimped and they cover it up with holy matrimony).
So, I’m reading and come across this alarming article that speaks about a 7-year-old african girl preparing to be married in five days (We are in 2009, right?) On what planet do the human race allow this to happen? I guess on Earth. One specific statement pierced my soul and it goes a little something like this, ” child brides represent a vast, lost generation of children”. Again, I can not believe that this type of abomination happens in the world today and child marriage was only denounced by the United States in 2001 as a serious human rights violation. This is not only disgusting, but it’s killing these young girls, taking a brutal toll on their health. Did you know that early pregnancies are the leading cause of death for girls age 15-19 in developing countries. It is reported today , at least 2 million women worldwide are currently living with gruesome vaginal and anal ruptures, called fistulas (they result from bearing children much too young). They can be fatal and most survivors are usually left incontinent (that means they can’t control their urine or feces) for life.
That ‘s only the physical part of this ordeal, what becomes of these young girls mentally and emotionally as they grow to be women? I work with children and have several young girls as relatives and I could never imagine this sort of thing happening. I could never imagine them getting caught up in sex slavery stamped as something as sacred as holy matrimony, but somebody’s little daughter is caught up in this. This matter is heartbreaking and we all can do something to help. We can write petitions and get them signed to send to our US representative:
